Why does this not just divide cash by burn?
Because revenue usually grows. Dividing cash by today's burn assumes it does not, and that overstates your runway by months — long enough to start a raise too late.
How much should I raise?
The figure here is eighteen months of net burn. A round takes three to six months to close, so eighteen months of runway leaves you a year of building and a real ability to walk away from bad terms.
